With companies like Samsung and LG making such fancy machines as those front loading ones (the ones that come in bright red and blue) that you see on TV, it's easy to feel intimidated. After all, those can run upwards of $2000. But don't feel overwhelmed, because companies like GE, Electrolux, Kenmore, Maytag, Miele, and Whirlpool all make fantastic laundry appliances at lower prices (Samsung and LG also have lower end models). Usually, the top loading models are less expensive than the front loaders. And if you want to cut the cost by even more, try getting a used one. You can find them online or in newspapers, and at extremely low prices. You probably have the doubt that you might get a lemon. However, you don't need to worry if you stick with the brands above, and assuming the previous owners didn't ruin it.
The dryers are made by the same companies, but getting a matching one can be difficult if you don't get them in a set. If you don't mind about the look, then by all means, go for it. However, if you are thinking about getting stackable laundry machines, you will have to buy them together. It doesn't work to stack different machines. Also, you want to watch out for the plug that comes on it. The older model plugs do not typically fit into the outlets of new model residences. If you do run into this, though, you can easily switch them over.
Of course, you can always just think about replacing the dryer altogether with a wooden collapsible rack that can dries your clothes while helping you to organize them. That, or you can get a retractable clothes line to put up when you need it and bring it down when you're done with it.
Last, don't forget to collect coupons. You can save a lot of money on liquid detergent or fabric softener, and you might even get motivated to try out new products (you might see a coupon for a new type of bleach for example).
